KOSOVO
Plight of the Refugees
Captions in context of 1999:
In retaliation for the 1999 NATO bombings of Yugoslavia, Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic began deporting hundreds of thousands of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo. As the refugees gathered in neighboring Macedonia and Albania, the international community scrambled to deal with the unexpected turn of events.
Thousands of refugees spent three months in a no-man's land just inside Macedonia in cold, miserable weather before they were able to return home to Kosovo.
